SIM lock:

A SIM-Lock, NETWORK-LOCK, Carrier Lock, IMEI-Lock or (master) subsidy lock serves as a technical constraint built into CDMA and GSM cellular phones by manufacturers for use by service providers to restrict the usage of these phones to a particular countries and/or networks. This is not like a mobile phone (retrospectively called SIM-free or unlocked) that does not impose any SIM limitations.

Virtually all smartphones can be unlocked to operate with any GSM network provider, however the phone can still display the original branding and may not support popular features of the new carrier. Apart from the locking, smartphones might also have firmware attached to them which is specific to the network provider. This firmware is installed through the service provider and is separate from the locking mechanism. Most mobile phones can be unbranded by re-flashing a new firmware variation, an operation recommended for advanced users only.

Unlocking Technology:

Normally, a locked device will display a message if a restricted SIM is used, asking for the unlock code. On the latest phone models working on Android operating system software, the phone is going to show a message stating “SIM network unlock PIN” or “Enter Network Lock Control Key” if it's network locked. Windows phones are going to show the message, “This SIM card can only be used on specific networks. Contact your customer service center for the unlock code”. Some other devices may well show alternative messages for example , "Enter special code" or "Enter unlocking code," or in some cases the device will simply present a message saying it's locked. When a valid code is entered, the mobile phone displays "Network unlocked” or “Network unlock successful”.

Economics:

Handset manufacturers have commercial incentives both to improve SIM lock security (which placates network companies and allows exclusivity deals) and weaken it (widening a mobile's appeal to customers that are usually not interested in the service provider that offers it). In addition, making it too difficult to unlock a smartphone might make it less attractive to mobile phone network service providers that have a legal responsibility to offer unlock codes for some handsets or in selected countries.

Unlocking Services:

Lots of companies offer a IMEI phone unlocking service . This service calls for those people who wish to unlock a handset to provide their IMEI number to a service supplier and often they will also need the country and service provider the handset is locked to, often sent via email or entered on their web-site. The company then will provide (for a fee) a unlock code for the device. For a lot of brands such as Nokia and Samsung many services also provide unique remote-unlocking software with guidance, where a cable is needed to remove the SIM lock at home. Such organizations may email the unlocking code or software that should remotely unlock the device. The cost for unlocking a cell phone can change depending on the network it's locked to and the handset model itself, as every unlock code is unique to each individual handset.
