As a parent you want your child to move on with their life as soon as possible, but what happens when the time comes when the car insurance company needs to know your child has left home. When my daughter moved out of my home, I made sure that her car was properly insured and that her parents were aware that she was moving out. We had a special meeting with our car insurance agent and he assured us it would be done properly and the process would not be hard at all. He also mentioned that he would contact my daughter's new parents to see if they have a policy and move the process along smoothly.

My son and I had a wonderful time while my daughter was living at home. Egg Insurance traveled often and I made sure to purchase our children a very nice car. Unfortunately one day my daughter informed me that she wanted to go out of town and she did not want to get a car insurance policy. I was confused as to what she meant by that, but my car insurance agent explained everything and I understood her reasoning.

My daughter and her friends left town one summer and did not have a car to use during the trip. Because this was an emergency situation, we had to get a policy quickly so that the vehicles could be insured. The policy worked out great because my daughter and her friends were able to drive around town in safe cars. This also helped my wife and me save money on our auto insurance premium each month.

Another thing happened when my daughter moved out of my home. My son asked my permission to take his girlfriend's car on a trip out of town and I gave him permission. I made sure that my son purchased her insurance policy while they were there. On their first trip they encountered a minor fender bender and my son were not injured. Because my daughter was not in the car, but on the outside of it, the other car insured her for only the liability part of the accident.

My daughter and her boyfriend drove to their new home and did not have any insurance to use for their rental car. My son and his girlfriend got out of the car and confronted the man who was at the wheel. The man did not have any insurance and did not have a copy of his driving record. My son did not think of asking to get the man's insurance information until he saw the damage that the car that he hit had on its side.

What would have happened if my child had been in the car? She could have gotten in an accident with someone who did not have car insurance. This could have cost hundreds or thousands of dollars in medical bills and possible future wages lost due to not being paid for an injury. Not having car insurance made it much easier for the driver that she hit to sue her for damages.

If you have a teenager that moves out of your home, it is imperative that they have car insurance. This protects your car and also covers your children in case something happens while they are driving. There was a time when I heard of a story where a woman whose car was stolen was able to recover after a very long search. I am sure that if she had not had car insurance, that she may have never been found.

It is important to talk to your child about getting car insurance and making sure that they have a policy. Talk about what it will cover them for. Make sure that you remind them what the policy can do for them should they get into an accident and the other party is uninsured. Your child does not have to move out of the house if they have car insurance. You can make sure that they have their own insurance policy and that they are protected at all times.
