Finding light in the darkness is something we could all relate to -- if it be as simple as discovering the remedy to a little mystery or as expansive an idea as searching for the purpose in life. The Last Campfire addresses both ends of the spectrum and does this throughout using charm, smarts, and grace. Hi Games' short-ish adventure hits the mark with cleverly designed puzzles, eye fashion, along with a touching story that left me feeling anything but forlorn.Forlorns, within this universe, are lost souls scattered around the colourful land of The Last Campfire; they've seemingly abandoned all hope and truly feel bereft of a objective. That is in stark contrast to our personality, Ember, whose purpose seems a lot stranger; Ember leaves their way through forests, swamps, and caves trying to help as many lost souls as you can, while also questioning exactly what exactly their purpose on earth is. By lighting campfires along the way you are helping guide the Forlorns on their journey and letting them follow in your footsteps. Granted, you don't really know where those footsteps will require them, but by showing the Forlorns they exist, so you allow them to understand that there is always light worth discovering in the shadow. It was a very clear and ultimately highly rewarding journey as I became more and more invested in the world and the creatures calling it home.

Progress is made through solving always interesting puzzles that always hit that sweet spot of not being so easy they're boring but being hard enough to meet upon solving, without becoming so complex that it causes groans. Special items and book mechanics are introduced throughout which prevent the puzzles from ever becoming overly repetitive, although there possibly is not quite the level of variation you would expect over its seven or six hours, it never fails to provide up something fresh just before it reaches a stage of getting stale. One of the biggest additions is the enjoyable telekinetic-like capability that comes into play about halfway through the narrative, and it is used in many of the following puzzles in clever ways. Manipulating items from a distance utilizing this provides a welcome breath of fresh air and allows for more ingenious puzzles to be solved in new satisfying ways.

Hello's inspirations are clear to see, and at in the design of these puzzle chambers. It's difficult not to be aware of this Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's numerous shrines -- though there's no combat whatsoever in The Last Campfire, and that is where distinct Nintendo sway gets visible. The minimal method of gameplay (it's possible to walk, run, pickup, and push and pull objects, but that's about it) combined with Ember's inability to jump adds shades of this beautiful Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker into the mixture.

With such a small listing of button inputs you would think it would be tough to keep items clean within an protracted amount of time, but The Last Campfire rarely has difficulty there due to its creative use of everything it has. It does a fantastic job of blending up things and keeping these problems thematically relevant, never once taking you out of its crafted world. The manner that significance is weaved into the design of every puzzle makes The Last Campfire stand out against many similar matches and does so smartly at every turn.

The heart subject of preserving purpose and hope can be found at every turn, often discreetly, but sometimes literally baked into the mechanics of a puzzle. This is obviously exemplified in a string of problems that have you transport an open fire by means of a degree while avoiding airstreams that will get the flame to extinguish. These start off easy yet build in complexity as Ember's narrative progresses, supplying just 1 illustration of how nicely The Last Campfire takes its fundamental ideas and develops them to something special.

Verdict
