Microsoft launched Windows 11 SE, its student-oriented operating system, in November, following the October rollout of Windows 11. Windows 11 SE was built with students and teachers in mind, and is designed to provide a simple, non-distracting environment for children, according to Microsoft.

It's not the first Microsoft operating system that's student-focused. Windows 10 S was the version for students of Windows 10, but Microsoft said the version of Windows 10 only blocked certain apps from downloading, similar to parental controls. Conversely, Windows 11 SE is a separate operating system with a focus on remote management.

Many schools in the United States began remote learning following the outbreak. This was crucial for many school-aged children to continue their education. Microsoft created Windows 11 SE with that in mind.

What is Windows 11 SE? Microsoft Windows 11 SE is a cloud first operating system that is designed for classrooms for children from K-8. It has a simple design and controlled installation of applications. This software is not sold in stores since it is classroom-focused. Instead, Windows 11 SE comes preloaded on selected Microsoft devices that Microsoft plans on selling to schools and educational institutions.

Is it possible to install Windows 11 SE on a home laptop? Unfortunately, no. Minecraft Servers Windows SE cannot be installed on your personal computer in the same way that Windows 10 or Windows 11 could. However, you can purchase a different version Windows and install it on your Windows 11 SE-enabled laptop after it was erased by an IT administrator. However the device will not be able to change back to Windows 11 SE. So be careful before you take the next step.

What apps work with Windows 11 SE devices Microsoft Office, Teams, Minecraft for Education and OneNote all are preloaded on Windows 11 SE, and apps like Google Chrome and Zoom can be downloaded. However, only administrators can download and manage other applications through Microsoft Intune for Education. Microsoft has made available this list of six kinds of apps that are available to download:

Apps for filtering content

Test-taking "solutions"

Accessibility applications

Effective classroom communication apps

Essential diagnostics, management, connectivity and supportability apps

Browsers

Apps like Spotify and Messenger did not make the cut. This means there are fewer distractions available to Windows 11 SE users. Microsoft said that apps that can be used in a web browser would still work.

You also can't change any of the settings within the operating system. Like the apps, only administrators are able to modify these settings. Administrators also have the option to wipe the device remotely.

How does Windows 11 compare to Windows 11 SE? Windows 11 SE and Windows 11 SE differ in that Windows 11 was intended for personal use, while Windows 11 SE was created to manage remote IT or classroom settings. The different objectives affect how users can get the operating system and what apps can be installed on the system. Windows 11 can be upgraded from Windows 10. Windows 11 has no limitations on apps. On Windows 11 SE, only administrators can add apps and even then, they can choose from only a small selection. Otherwise, the systems look and operate similarly.
