A Miami-Dade grand jury that is overseeing the Surfside condo collapse that killed 98 people in June has released a report outlining ways to avoid a similar tragedy. The report calls for more funds and inspectors and staff to find unsafe buildings, and suggests raising the standards of qualification for inspectors. The panel also suggested that the process of certifying residential properties should begin earlier than 40 years after the property is built. The engineering firm chosen for the Surfside condo's 40-year recertification process in 2018 had discovered "deep" concrete deterioration however they were unable to perform repairs due to structural stability concerns. While it wasn't their responsibility to discover the causes of the deadly collapse, the grand jury also observed that, six months later, investigators still don't know exactly how it happened.
