The wild success of Minecraft didn't come without its problems, one of which was that the original game was coded in Java. This is the version that many players prefer, for a variety of reasons. However, the Bedrock edition has been the'standard' edition for many years. Servers It was renamed to 'Minecraft" in 2017.

Confused? The differences are very important to those invested in Minecraft, with the most crucial being that it's easier to mod the Java edition. No matter how you play, the split had one major flaw on PC: you had to purchase both versions separately. Servers Now Mojang and Microsoft has announced that, as of tomorrow June 7, the two versions of what some consider the most successful game of all time have been smooshed-together into Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC.

That's some inspired naming right there. This allows buyers to access both editions and is the "only offering" of vanilla Minecraft for Windows PC. You can cross-play the game with Java or Bedrock players if you launch the edition your friends are playing.

Players who have one of the versions will be upgraded to the duo pack edition. Mojang states that the upgrade may take several days, but that all Minecraft Launcher users should notice the new package automatically.

Mojang, in a blog post announcing the change, stated that Java (and Bedrock) will still be separate games with their unique features. "The only difference is that now you get both by default when buying Minecraft for your Windows PC, and access them both from the same launcher."

Over the years, there has been controversy about the split between versions. Java players were furious when Microsoft started insisting that they have a Microsoft account. But this move seems to on the face of it just make a lot of sense and be good for players.

Minecraft is in remarkable health. Players are currently waiting for the huge Wilds update (opens new tab). In the real world it remains a constant presence, most recently being used in French president Emmanuel Macron's re-election campaign (opens in new tab) (though I wonder how many visitors to that server could vote). And of course, regardless of what edition they're using, players continue to create the most mind-blowing of visual spectacles in this blocky and endlessly creative world (opens in new tab). welcome to my home
