Fortnite may be the most played game, however that doesn't mean it's affecting other gaming phenomenons. Microsoft's Helen Chiang told Business Insider in an interview that Minecraft currently has 112 million active players every month, a surge of 20 million over figures as of October 2018. This is inclusive of all players, not just those who play the game via an Xbox Game Pass. INFO However, it's still a remarkable achievement for a game that's been around for a little over a decade.

Chiang explained it as an advantage of the imaginative game's evergreen status -- it's a title that players "keep returning to." It's possible to play Fortnite or any other game that get the spotlight, but there's a real chance that you'll want to build homes and tunnels in Minecraft after that.

Other factors are likely to be important too. On top of its sheer accessibility across platforms, Minecraft's unwieldy graphics and simple mechanics allow you to play on low-end devices such as a budget PC or a smartphone. You can still enjoy excellent gaming experience with only the smallest investment in hardware.

Microsoft's goal is to keep the game relevant. The augmented reality of Minecraft Earth helps, as do ray-tracing and other efforts to improve the appearance. It's not clear if this is enough, however. Roblox recently topped 100 million monthly players, and Fortnite may not be far from that (it was reported to have 78.3 million users in August 2018). It won't take long for other games to capture an era of cultural relevance.
