SIM lock:

A sim-lock, NETWORK-LOCK, Carrier-Lock, IMEI-Lock or (Master) SUBSIDY lock serves as a technical constraint built into CDMA and GSM mobile phone devices by manufacturers to be used by carrier networks to restrict using these phones to a particular countries and/or networks. This is contrary to a cell phone (retrospectively called SIM-free or unlocked) which doesn't enforce any SIM limitations. The key reason why several carriers SIM lock their smartphones is simply because they offer phones at a discount to customers in return for for a contract to cover the use of the network for a specified time period, typically between one and three years. This business model permits the organization to recover the cost of the mobile phone across the duration of the contract. These discounts are worth around a couple of hundred US dollars.

Unlocking Technology:

A handset can be unlocked by entering a code provided by the network operator. Different mechanisms contain software operating on the device or a computer attached to the device, hardware devices that attach to the mobile or over-the-air by the provider. More often than not the unlock procedure is permanent. The code needed to eliminate all locks from a cell phone is called the master code, network code key, or multi-lock code. If the handset is network locked it will usually display one of the following messages: SIM network PIN blocked, Enter lock PIN.

Economics:

On many occasions a SIM-locked handset is sold at a noticeably cheaper price than an unlocked one mainly because the service provider plans income through its service. SIM locks are applied on inexpensive (pay-as-you-go) mobile phones, though special discounts on more costly handsets demand a subscription which offers guaranteed income. Unlocked devices have a greater market value.

Unlocking Services:

A number of organizations provide a on-line unlocking service . This service needs individuals that wish to unlock a mobile phone handset to supply their IMEI number to a unlocking company and often they will also need the country and network the device is locked to, often sent by email or submitted on their web-site. The organization then will provide (at a cost to you) an unlock code for the mobile phone.
